Bugs and Bush Pilots

Day Eighteen

Today was our first outing in Sault Ste. Marie. We started the day by visiting the Bush Pilot Heritage Centre located by the St Marys River in an old warehouse. The centre was well done and had about twenty bush planes strategically placed in various positions throughout the warehouse, a few you could actually enter the body of the plane to view the cockpits… very cool! Located near the back of the warehouse was a theatre showing a twenty minute 3D documentary on forest fire fighting. The theatre was constructed to hold about two dozen people and had wind, smoke and mist apparatuses along the walls and roof to proved a realistic feel to the film. The film itself was well done and really gave me a new perspective on what forest fighters, and pilots go through when fighting fires. The footage of the bombers filling up with water by skimming a lake and diving in to bomb a fire was soooooo cool!

The heritage centre was hosting a few other organizations. One was the Guinness Book of World Records. They had various interactive stations spread amongst the planes for anyone to try and set a new world record, most stations had to do with agility and reflex speed. I was more fascinated by the planes and did not want to take away ones world record by my amazing speed, and agility ðŸ’ª

The second attraction was the Entomica Insectarium, this attraction had the attention of Lori. The Insectarium was in a room off the the side and was far warmer and humid compared to the main part of the warehouse. The insectarium hosted about fifteen aquariums set up all around the room, each with their own habitat and insect species. Lori was in conversation with the insect keeper when I finally pulled myself away from the planes to investigate. The keeper was a young lady who was very eager to tell us all about the insects. What really had me stand back…. Literally, is she took the insects out and allowed you to hold them… Lori was in, but passed on the hissing cockroach.

After a quick tour through the gift shop we headed out to explored Sault Ste. Marie. The Canadian side of the town was actually smaller than I imagined and did not take very long to explore. Around mid afternoon we picked up a few groceries, a couple of items for the RV, and headed home to walk the dogs.
