Day 211
When we booked this KOA over by Perdido Bay, we figured we would spend our time in Pensacola, Florida, and a day in Mobile, Alabama. With an interesting twist, we spent one day in Pensacola and the balance in Mobile. Today being our last chance to visit Pensacola, we decided to return and visit the Spanish Fort, Barrancas. This Fort was used by the confederates to assault Fort Pickens located directly across the Pensacola channel from them.
The last few days have been pretty cool, so we packed up the two quadrupeds for the drive and set out to explore the old Spanish Fort. Three quarters of the way to our destination we entered the final stretch of road that would bring us to the Fort, only to find it was the west entrance to the Naval Base. We made an about-face before reaching the guardhouse and headed back to civilian territory. Thinking I did something wrong when I planned the route, I double checked the location of the Fort and discovered that the Spanish Fort, Naval and lighthouse Museums that were located in that area required military passes to visit.
Our backup plan for the day was to pick up a few groceries and head back the the campground and go for a long walk with the pups there.
