Gore Bay

 Day Twenty Four

A half hour north of us is the small town of Gore Bay, the population is approximately 800 and served as a port for the island before the first bridge was built in 1950, today it serves mostly a recreational port. During the winter season boats are removed from Lake Huron and stored in large boat yards just beside the pier. To move the boats they use a specialized crane. The wheel base on the crane is large enough to straddle a boat, the operator would then hook thick straps from one side of the crane, under the boat, and onto the other side of the crane. Once the boat was strapped in it would ever so carefully, lift the boat up. On the pier, there was two tracks the cranes wheels would slide into and guide the crane safely out. Once the crane was on the pier, the operator would then begin to lower the boat down into the lake.

Just ten minutes West of the pier, the old Janet Head Lighthouse built in 1879 can be found. The Lighthouse is open for visitors to walk around, but has been privately owned since 1967.

By late afternoon, we made the journey back to our RV. When we arrived, the RV park was coming alive with locals who made the weekend commute to prepare their mini homes for the summer.

Crane used to move these massive boats in and out of the lake.
