Day 165
When I was younger I had hoped for the opportunity to visit the famed Smithsonian. I would have discussions with friends who had visited, and they would tell me it would take five days to explore everything. I believed they were exaggerating on this and was sure you could probably do it in a few days. After spending only two days at the Smithsonian, we have barely scratched the surface. So far we have visited the Natural and American museums, along with the Smithsonian castle. We still have the National Gallery of Art (two buildings for this), National Archives museum, spy museum and Lori is hoping to get to the National Portrait Gallery, not to mention the countless memorials and heritage sites. If you had noticed, I did not list the Air and Space Museum on our list. This is because the museum is closed for a one billion dollar upgrade, I have been told that it supposed to be amazing. What’s even worse about our timing! We will miss the grand reopening by eight days. 😢
Todays destinations are the holocaust museum and the Lincoln Memorial. Now that we are masters of the transit systems, it took no time to get to Washington and down to the Smithsonian. We stepped off the bus one block from the museum and began heading over. The rain was expected to continue today along with a cold front that moved in, making the wind and rain very chilly. We arrived at the museum around 10:30 and quickly made our way in.
The Holocaust Museum comprises of three floors and walks you through the entire history. The exhibits held nothing back in showing you the horrors inflicted. For young kids and people who wished not to see the real horrific photos, the museum had placed a low barrier wall around a tv, warning of the content showing if you were to peer over. After three hours, Lori and I left speechless.
After a little cold fresh air as we waited for our bus, we moved on to the Lincoln Memorial and over to visit with Albert Einstein for a short period before decision to head home for a hot cup of tea! Brrrrr.
