Ghost in the Machine

 Day Twenty Six

The weather today was about twenty two with a cool wind blowing in from the west. Lori took the opportunity to relax in the hammock by the beach…zzzzzz, and I worked on my computer. Later in the afternoon I practiced flying my drone over the lake, and introduced myself to our neighbour when she came in from paddle boarding. I took the opportunity to inquire about the RV houses. She explained there is multiple reasons for this, one is the park restrictions only allow RV’s on the lots, manufactured homes do not have sewer holding tanks and use residential plumbing, two, the lots are leased, so if there is a dispute, the RV owner can just take everything and go. The final question I had was the why the roof over the RV, the idea behind this is for longevity of the RV.

Back when we purchased our RV, it was disclosed that the RV had a power drain on the starter battery. The dealership was unsuccessful in locating the source, and had installed a cutoff switch at the battery, I will just need to switch it off when the RV is not in use, easy enough.

As part of the upgrades, we installed solar power. What was weird after the solar install was that the engine could start when the cutoff switch was in the off position, everything seemed to work fine so I left it alone.

Two weeks ago, we were staying in the Happyland Campground just outside of Thunder Bay. The day was cool and we were relaxing in the RV with music playing on the dash stereo. The music played for a few hours when it stopped in the middle of a song. I went to check the stereo and noticed it was completely powered down, I pressed the power to turn it on, and no response. I expanded my investigation and pressed the power button on the Scan Gauge, nothing happened there.

At this time, I decided to check the battery charge levels on the display and to my horror, the starter battery was showing as dead! As I stood there in complete disbelief, I heard the Scan Gauge whistle and power on, then the lights on the stereo flashed to life. I looked back to the battery display and it now showed full charge for the starter battery.

This is now a reoccurring issue happening once a day, with the power going down for a minute or two, and then returning back to normal. The concern now is the engine light is now staying on when we are driving the RV. In order eliminate my suspicion of the solar, I may disconnect the solar to see if that does anything over the course of a few days.

Battery displaying for over just a minute does the above photo and then returns to the below photo.
