Day 273
Today we depart from the Vail Lake KOA, we enjoyed our stay here, having almost an entire section of the campground to ourselves has been very peaceful. Last night the skies remained clear allowing for the temperature to drop below freezing for the first time, catching me off guard with our water works. When We woke in the morning we noticed there was no running water in the Rv. I switched over to our pump with concern that it may have froze also; with a quick burrrrrp it quickly pressurized the lines, I breathed a sigh of relief and concluded the water must be frozen at the campground tap.
After we resolved our water issue, I noticed our broken propane furnace was running and not the heat pump. After playing with the climate controls I concluded that the heat pump must have frozen during the night and it automatically switched over to the propane furnace when it failed. Fortunately, for unexplained reasons, the propane furnace did not go into the epileptic seizure it was doing before I quit using it. With concern now our heat pump in the air conditioner could now be damaged, I was glad my replacement furnace motor will be arriving at our next campground.
Our destination is the ghost town of Calico located close to Barstow, just northeast of Los Angeles. With us being below Los Angeles, our route will take us through the busy outskirts of the city and the Cajon pass before entering the Mojave Desert. We are not entirely sure what there is to see in Barstow and Calico, but it was the best path to take to get above Los Angeles without driving into the city itself.
