Day 168
The weather in Washington for the last five days consisted of grey skies with on and off rain. Today is our departure day from DC, and we head inland towards Tennessee for a few weeks before heading back towards Myrtle Beach. We really enjoyed our visit to Washington, and would say to anyone that it’s worth a visit. Unfortunately we did not see everything we wanted to see, due to a day of rain and one day for chores, but we came close. Like the discussions I had with my friends years ago, I now agree you need about five full days to visit the museums.
Naturally, the day we depart; the skies are blue and the sun is shining. Our accommodations at the Washington KOA were excellent and felt we made to best choice on our decision to camp as close to the Capitol as possible. We left Washington early this morning for a five hour drive too Wytheville, Virginia for an overnight stay before moving on towards Tennessee.
The bulk of our drive was on the I-81, being a secondary highway we figured it would be fairly quiet drive. Much to our surprise, the road was extremely busy. The amount of trucks going in both directions was unfathomable, there was thousands of rigs going in both directions in the time we travelled it. Figuring it must be a major corridor, I looked up the history of I-81
“I-81 is heavily used as a trucking corridor and is often used as a bypass of busier and more congested Interstates to the east such as I-95. For this reason, it is also used heavily by drug and human traffickers as it is less monitored by law enforcement than I-95. This led to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) forming a taskforce to combat the issue in 2017.”
We arrived at the Wytheville KOA around five o’clock. Walking the pups around the campground, it was apparent this KOA was loaded with things to do. Would have been nice to stay for a few days, but tomorrow we are off to Nashville, Tennessee.
