Snail Trail

 Day 116

The Fundy National Park opened in 1950, showcasing rugged coastline that rise up to the Canadian Highlands. The park is located near the village of Alma and covers an area of 80 square miles. The park offers a wide variety of amenities, such as hiking, golfing and camping during the summer season. Included in this list is the heated saltwater swimming pool, perfect for relaxing in after a good day of hiking.

When we first arrived in Sussex I had hopes to do a little swimming during our coastline adventures through the park. We never made it to the pool that day, so we decided to return to the park for a day of swimming, beach combing and lunch in the small village of Alma.

When we entered the stone building to the pool, I was taken back in time to when my parents would take us to the hot springs in Radium. The appearance and feel of the pool was similar. From the traditional look of the buildings and park signs, to the pool being outdoors. Entering the change rooms, I had a little of that childish excitement you would have as kid. I reminisced on how I would change as fast as possible, then wait impatiently for my dad to get ready. Once we were ready to go, I would move as fast as I could walk, knowing I would get in trouble if I ran to the pool.

Like my dad, I took my time changing, then headed out to the pool with anticipation. Lori had beaten me to the pool and was already staking out a corner of the deck with a few pool chairs for our towels and gear. The pool was a little on the chilly side and took it took a little before completely submerging myself into the water. Unlike Radium, this pool is saltwater from the Bay of Fundy, filtered and….. sort of heated. We splashed around until my fingers had become the resemblance of shrivelled prunes before taking our exit from the pool. After a quick shower to wash off the salt and warm up, I met Lori back at the truck and we headed to the beach for a little beach combing before lunch and heading home.
