Day 107
The days have been getting warmer and the humidity has been on the rise, today hit 31 with a humidity level of 78% The owners of the park informed us the humidity is extremely high and residence have been advised to keep an eye on any elderly family members living alone.
Amherst is not huge on the tourist locations to hit, it a small clean town situated perfectly for travellers to stop and rest before make there way to Cape Breton and/or Newfoundland. I did my best to find a few things of interest to explore for the day. Our journey started east to the town of Oxford, known as the Blueberry capitol of Canada.
Oxford, being proud of the blueberry title has erected a giant statue called the Blueberry Man to mark this accomplishment. When we arrived in Oxford, I stopped for gas at the edge of the town. Just as I was getting out to fill up, Lori noted she found the statue. I looked to Lori, and she was pointing to a less than large statue of the Blueberry Man tucked away over by the edge of the gas stations. Definitely not what we had envisioned. After a good laugh, I snapped a few pictures and moved onto our next destination.
Our next few destinations were beaches along the north shore, between Nova Scotia and PEI. Both beaches we spectacular. We walked the pups down the sandy beach and enjoyed a little lunch in the grass before moving to the second beach.
Our last destination for the day was the French Fort Beausejour. The Fort is located on the border of New Brunswick, along the Bay of Fundy. The Fort itself is in ruins with only the underground passages and store rooms still intact. We walked the Fort for short time before noting the dogs had enough, Gizmo was struggling with the sun on his bare back, and Sophie’s tongue was dragging along the ground. We did not get to far into the history of the Fort, but I am finding the story to be the same right across the maritimes, the French and English fighting over the rich fishing grounds. By the time we returned to the truck it was pushing 4:00 o’clock and decided to head home.
