Hold Onto Your Hat

Day 278

Throughout the night the wind hit the Rv so hard I wondered if we were going to loose a vent, or A/C cover on the roof. With my mind on today, I was hoping the wind would die down before we departed west towards Santa Paula in the morning.

By the time the morning rolled around, the wind was pushing 20 mph with gusts hitting at 40 mph. We took our time closing up the Rv and checked the weather forecast to see if the wind was expected to die down anytime soon. Much to our disappointment, the weather networks had placed wind gust warnings through the valley and into the Vincent Pass; right were we were headed.

We waited an additional hour before deciding it was not going to improve. We pulled away from the campground and entered the highway with the final hope our direction in relation to the wind would be head on instead of hitting us from the side.

With a little luck, my hope came true. We made it down the valley and into the pass with the wind coming at us head on, only in a few spots where the road changed direction did we get jolted sideways by a wind gust. Once we crossed over the pass the wind died away and the balance of the drive was beautiful. We made it to our next campground located in Fillmore shortly after lunch and began to set up.

Our stay for the next four nights is at the Kenny Grove Park, located on the norther edge of Fillmore. The campground was a county park rather than a KOA as we had noticed the prices for the KOA’s towards the California coast were a little more expensive. The campground itself was nestled in a wooded area with about three dozen camping spots. One section of the campground was closed due to damage from the recent storms, but the rest seemed to be in good shape. The oddest thing we noticed about the place was we were the only ones there. Throughout the day we watch the odd vehicle pull in, but their interests were in the campground washroom. Another truck pulled into a campsite and the driver took a voltage tester to the power outlet before driving away, I figured he must be doing electrical work in the campground, but I noticed there was a woman and kids in the truck when they passed our spot… very weird.

High wind warnings.

A river ran through the campground. During those storms that hit California, the section of campground across the little bridge was damaged.
