Day 232
Living in Alberta we are a accustomed to seeing oil derrick pumps scattered throughout the countryside and never really think much of it. Today we head northwest through the oil grounds of Texas and New Mexico to Carlsbad. During our journey, both Lori and I were disheartened on what we saw.
Just shortly after we left San Angelo the desert scenery went from the picturesque western lands you see in western movies to oil derricks, pumps, fracking ponds, garbage and the constant stench of crude oil. We would have probably thought little of it, if it lasted for only a few miles, the sad thing is, it lasted for over two hundred fifty miles.
Our campground for the next week is located in an area called Seven Rivers, thirty minutes from any town. No oil equipment is visible around us but we can certainly smell it.
