Welcome to the Bayou

Day 217

We leave NOLA today and head west to Lafayette, Louisiana for the next four days. The weather forecast is calling for sunny skies with a temperature reaching 21c throughout the day. This weather would have been preferable during our visit to NOLA, but we take what is given to us.

Our route to the next campground was two hours from our current location and will take us to the edge of Baton Rouge before veering left to Lafayette. During the trip, we traversed multiple long bridges that crossed over sections of the Louisiana bayou. On our approach to Baton Rouge, we encountered heavy traffic that moved at a snails pace until we crossed the final bridge out of the city.

Once we left Baton Rouge We entered the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge that runs from Baton Rouge to Lafayette. This bridge is 18 miles in length and the third longest bridge in the United States, fourteenth longest in the world. We arrived in Lafayette around one and set up our campground before taking the pups for a long walk to stretch from the drive.

Lots of traffic going through The city.
The Mississippi in Baton Rouge.

This is where you end up if you accidentally get forced off the bridge. If you survive the water, the alligators will certainly finish the job.
