I’m a Levelling Man

Day 125

It was going to be a busy day, in the morning, a service tech from Toy Masters was expected to arrive around seven, then we would need to pack up for the next campground. When the tech arrived at eight, I provided the symptoms to the problem, along with the trouble shooting suggestions equalizer provided me a few days earlier. Within half hour, he concluded the control box to the system was fried, exactly what I told him Equalizer figured the problem might be…. Hmmm 🤔. He made an attempt to remove the box and ended up stripping two of the bolts that secured it to the chassis. Unable to remove the box, he requested to bring the Rv to the shop where they would remove the control box and source a new one for us. After he left, Lori and I made some breakfast before packing up the Rv.

We decided to drive separate vehicles into town making it easier to navigate the crowded streets of Charlottetown. Shortly after eleven, I pulled into the parking lot of Toy Masters. The service writer, Tim came out to greet me, he politely informed me they are unable to source the control box from their suppliers, but if I could get Newmar to send it to them, they would be happy to install it. Shortly into the conversation Lori pulled up, I brought her up to speed on the situation and was pretty sure she was thinking the same thing I was about sourcing the part, and paying them to install it….  Not going to happen.

After Tim left, lori and I decided to keep the vehicles detached, I would head to the campground and get set up, and lori would run a few errands in Charlottetown. Our next spot is the Lord Selkirk Campground ninety minutes southeast of Charlottetown… see what I mean… less that ninety minutes. I arrived around two and proceeded to set the Rv and campsite up.

The whole time I was driving to the campground, my mind was fixated on why I was looking for a company to deal with the leveller situation?  So far, I had done all the leg work. I decided to take the bull by the horns and called Equalizer again. I tip my hat to Equalizer, every time I have spoken with them they have been nothing but friendly and helpful. I began to explain the situation, and they walked me through a few different things, with no avail, he finally noted that there are a few fuses in the control box that I could check. I would need to crawl under the Rv for this and deal with the two stripped bolts, so I concluded my conversation with Equalizer before heading under.

The two stripped bolts were on the same side of the control box and were definitely not going anywhere. The control box was made of plastic so I decided to rip the one side free from the bolts, knowing there was enough space to drill new mounting holes onto the box if I had to. The box came free quickly and the second the control box went vertical, green water started dripping out…… this explains everything.

I popped the back of the control box open and the circuit board was soaking in water…. No wonder the levellers were going crazy. Knowing this was not a fuse issue, and no Rv company on the island would be able to source the part for me, I decided to call my buddy Peter at Bucars Rv back in Calgary to see what he could do. Long story short, a new control box is on its way from Newmar, and Peter will forward it to me when it arrives at Bucars.

After discovering the issue, I was literally set free from my worry of mystery power surges happening within the electrical system. Our minds can really conjure up some interesting theories when we don’t have all the facts. When Lori arrived, we walked the campground with the pups before sitting back and enjoying a peaceful afternoon.
