Day Seventy Three
The best move we could have possibly done when planning our day trips was to stop watching the weather. The truck is now packed with extra clothes, coats, and umbrellas to handle any weather thrown at us, short of a full blown storm. Today we are headed towards Cape St. George located at the tip of a small landmass that sticks out from Port Au Port East.
Our first stop was a three kilometre hiking trail just past gravels pond. The trail was said to have spectacular views of small coves that dotted the shoreline. When we arrived, the wind coming off the ocean was cool, we donned our windbreakers and headed for the trail entrance. The morning was turning into a beautiful day and the sun was was doing its best to heat things up quickly.
The trail was amazing and lead from one secluded cove to the next, all with the same image, a blue lagoon with the calm sea lapping up onto gravel shores. We traversed the trail past the halfway mark when we decided to turn back. The day was progressing into a hot one, and the pups were panting pretty hard. At the entrance of the trail, it crossed a patch of cut grass before entering the parking lot. Gizmo enjoyed the cool grass on his back with a few victory rolls, for a job well done on the trail.
Our next stop was the Cape St. George, about an hour away. When we arrived, we stopped for some lunch before heading over to the Cape. Of course, I had to play with the drone. At the Cape, the wind coming off the ocean was strong causing the waves to hit the cliffs of the Cape with huge crashes.
There was an information board posted by the parking lot telling you That the Cape was one of the best whale watching grounds in the province. If we were fortunate we could see bottled nosed dolphins, seventy foot Fin whales or even playful Humpbacks. The most common whale to visit the area was the Minke whale. We explored the area for awhile and took in the amazing scenery with the hopes of seeing a whale in the distance. Unfortunately, the ocean was pretty choppy preventing us from seeing anything.
After our walk around the Cape we climbed back into the truck and decided to make the round trip around the whole landmass…island in my books. It was close to three when we competed the circle route and headed to town to find a local car wash.
Since our arrival I have been waiting for the opportunity to wash the truck from a mass bombing of bird crap during our wait at the ferry. A light post we were parked beside during our wait was loaded with nests. The birds in the nests were having a grand old time painting the vehicles below. During our wait I had noticed the bird bombs all over the ground, thinking I would hate to be the guy who was under all that; well, I was the guy! I just never noticed it was our truck behind the RV that was the one getting it. We made a few pit stops in town and restored the truck to its original colour.
