The Road to Avonlea

Day Fifty Eight

I can honestly say that I’ve never read Anne of Green Gables nor have I watched the series on CBC (not that this was Lucy Maude Mongomery’s only literary endeavour) but . . . we are on Prince Edward Island and this part of our journey would not be complete without a trip to Cavendish and the Green Gables Shore.

This morning was blustery, not very cold but the wind whipped the rain. We set out for what is called the Central Coastal Drive. From Cornwall the drive is about 40 minutes. Along the highway, we came across a cute toy store in an old house, we just had to visit. The store had a sign which reads “if our parking lot is full, so is our store, please try again later”. Inside was jam packed with toys for all ages. A bit pricey, but still worth the visit. A rather large Humpty Dumpty sits in a field which provides a good photo stop for families.

We arrived in Cavendish to our first stop at the LM Montgomery Homestead, which housed a library, a small gift shop and a walk through out the property where Miss Montgomery spent her formative years. We opted not to take the $5.00 self guided tour not being familiar with the history of the author. From here we arrived at the Green Gables Heritage Centre. An Anne of Green Gables Mecca for the thousands of tourists that flock here every year. Although not busy when we arrived, the parking availability for tour buses and cars is plentiful. Again, we opted not to pay for the entry but as expected, I did explore the gift shop and came out gift free!

Down the road was Avonlea village, boardwalk shops, and restaurants which unfortunately were not all open. We did manage to have a burger at Boom burger. I’m sure on a hot summer day this place would be hopping. After lunch we attempted to find the Stanley Bridge Wildlife Museum but somehow missed it. On a good note, they’re were some local artisan shops to peek through. The drive through the countryside is spectacular, a must do! On our way back to the campground I twisted Dave’s arm to gps the local quilt store where I did pick up a felted puffin and a wee bit of regional material.
